SNOWMOBILE REPAIR & INSPECTION

Snowmobile Repair & Inspection

The winter season is a time of excitement for those who love snowmobiling. But before you hit the snow-covered trails, it’s crucial to perform some essential maintenance on your snowmobile to ensure it’s ready for action. Snowmobiles are seasonal machines that often sit idle through the warmer months, so giving them some attention before the snow flies will improve safety, performance, and longevity. We have certified motorsports technicians who will thoroughly inspect and repair all aspects of your sled.

Pre-Season Snowmobile Maintenance Inspection

  1. Inspect and Change the Oil. Oil is the lifeblood of any engine, and snowmobiles are no exception. Even though snowmobiles aren’t used year-round, the oil still degrades over time. Make sure to:
Change the oil: Old oil can become thick and less effective at lubricating your engine. Replacing it with fresh, high-quality oil ensures proper engine performance.
Check the oil level: If you didn’t change the oil before storing the snowmobile, check the oil level and top it off as necessary.

  2. Check the Fuel System. Fuel can break down or go stale when left sitting for too long. This can lead to clogging and poor engine performance. To keep your fuel system running smoothly.
Drain old fuel: If you stored your snowmobile with old gas in the tank, it’s a good idea to drain it and refill it with fresh fuel.
Add fuel stabilizer: If you didn’t drain the gas at the end of last season, adding a fuel stabilizer to the tank can help prevent issues with the carburetor or injectors.
Check the fuel lines: Inspect the fuel lines for cracks or wear. Over time, rubber can deteriorate and cause leaks, which are dangerous.

  3. Inspect the Spark Plugs. Spark plugs ignite the fuel in the engine, and worn-out plugs can lead to poor performance, rough idling, or difficulty starting. Be sure to:
Check for wear: Look for signs of corrosion or deposits on the spark plugs.
Clean or replace: If the plugs look worn or dirty, clean them or replace them entirely to ensure a strong spark.

  4. Examine the Battery. Snowmobile batteries often lose charge or degrade when not in use for extended periods. Before you head out, check your battery’s health by:
Testing the battery: Use a multimeter to check the voltage. If the battery is weak, recharge it or replace it with a new one.
Cleaning the terminals: Battery terminals can corrode, leading to poor connections. Clean the terminals and apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to prevent further corrosion.

  5. Check the Belts. The drive and secondary belts are crucial for transferring power from the engine to the track. Worn or damaged belts can affect your snowmobile’s acceleration and handling. To maintain optimal performance:
Inspect the belts: Check for fraying, cracks, or signs of excessive wear. If the belts look damaged, replace them before riding.
Check the tension: Ensure that the belts are properly tensioned. Too tight or too loose a belt can lead to poor performance or even breakage.
  6. Lubricate the Suspension. The suspension system on your snowmobile is responsible for providing a smooth ride and maintaining traction. Over time, suspension parts can dry out, leading to squeaks and poor handling. To keep the suspension working smoothly:
Grease the suspension: Use the appropriate grease for your snowmobile’s suspension system to keep moving parts lubricated.
Inspect shocks and struts: Check for any leaks or damage to the shocks. If they’re worn out, it’s time to replace them to ensure a comfortable and stable ride.
  7. Examine the Track. Your snowmobile’s track is essential for maintaining traction on snow and ice. If the track is damaged or worn, your snowmobile may struggle to maintain grip, especially in deep snow. Here’s how to check the track:
Inspect for damage: Look for cuts, tears, or missing lugs on the track. A damaged track can cause issues, so it’s important to repair or replace it if necessary.
Check tension: Ensure the track has the correct tension. Too tight or too loose can cause premature wear and affect performance.
  8. Check the Carburetor or Fuel Injection System. If your snowmobile uses a carburetor, it’s crucial to inspect it before the season starts. Fuel lines, jets, and filters can become clogged with debris or stale fuel, impacting fuel delivery.
Clean the carburetor: If you’re using a carbureted snowmobile, take it apart and clean all components to ensure optimal fuel flow.
Fuel injectors: For fuel-injected snowmobiles, make sure the injectors are clean and functioning properly.
  9. Inspect the Steering and Ski Alignment. Proper alignment of your snowmobile’s skis is essential for safe handling and maneuverability. Before hitting the trails:
Check the skis: Make sure the skis are properly aligned and not bent. Misaligned skis can cause poor handling and tire wear.
Lubricate steering components: Grease the steering system to ensure smooth turning.
  10. Test the Lights and Electrical System. Good visibility is critical when riding, especially in low-light conditions or at night. Make sure your snowmobile’s electrical system is working:
Test all lights: Check the headlights, taillights, and brake lights to ensure they’re functioning correctly.
Check fuses and connections: Make sure there are no loose connections or blown fuses that could leave you stranded in the dark.
  11. Check for General Wear and Tear. Finally, perform a general inspection of your snowmobile’s overall condition:
Frame and body: Look for any cracks or damage to the frame or body that could affect the structural integrity.
Skid plate: Inspect the skid plate for any damage or wear. It protects the undercarriage from debris and damage, so it’s important to keep it intact.
